Jamie Dornan mixed a rugged grooming look with a supremely elegant Tod’s suit done in black velvet for the premiere of Fifty Shades Freed in Paris earlier this week.
Irish actor Jamie Dornan is currently promoting his new movie, Fifty Shades Freed, and is dressing more than a bit like his character in the film. If you’ve managed to block out the plot line of the Fifty Shades trilogy, let us briefly remind you that Dornan plays an obscenely rich sex addict with a heart of gold, or something. His character, Christian Grey, like all romance-novel heroes, is the proverbial man who can do both (you can pretty much take that however you want to, and it will be true). At the Paris premiere of the movie earlier this week, Dornan brought that contrast to the red carpet when he mixed a rugged grooming look with a supremely elegant Tod’s suit done in black velvet. His style was hard-to-nail Romance Perfect: masculine and refined without being cheesy.
Now, modern as this look may be, we realize that wearing a velvet suit and half-buttoned shirt in the real world is a tall order, especially if you aren’t Jamie Dornan—or, say, Tom Ford. That said, the magic of this look is really about its sense of balance more than the specific elements at play. A scruffy beard and—sure!—even some chest hair look great with a suit in the same way a military-tidy buzz cut was made for sweats and sneakers. Style and grooming are at their best when they have a little bit of tension between them. Rock a beard with a fancy suit, and you give off the impression that you’re a man of many layers. Maybe not the sort of person who owns a sex swing and also has professional ballroom-dancing skills, but at least someone who has more than one mode. More than one mode is good.
