Is whole wheat really better for you? It depends, new study suggests
White bread is making a comeback. Researchers say it may be just as healthy as whole wheat bread.
Whole wheat bread has been generally considered the healthier option since it’s made with whole grains that haven’t been bleached or processed in the way that white bread is. It also contains more fibre than white bread and so typically people tend to consume less because its more filling.
A trial conducted by the Weizmann Institute had 20 healthy volunteers eat white bread for a week straight before taking a two-week break and then spending a week eating whole wheat sourdough bread.
Throughout the study, originally published in the Cell Metabolism Journal, a host of the participant’s vitals were tracked including blood sugar levels, iron, cholesterol and fat.
By the end it was found that the overall health of participants was virtually the same no matter what kind of bread they ate.
Something researchers also found however, was that the positive reaction to white bread depended on the person. About half of the participants had a better glycemic reaction to white bread while the other half did not.
This would suggest that eating healthy isn’t always as simple as switching to whole wheat.
In an interview with the U.K. Daily Mail, Dr. Avraham Levy said, “We didn’t take into consideration how much you would eat based on how full you felt. So the story must go on.”
