These are the wavy up-and-comers worth keeping an eye on next year.
Every year brings a slew of new style rebels to our attention and these young actors, musicians, and models on the make look like their gearing up to have their best, most stylish year ever in 2018—just like you (right? right). Here’s why we think you should be paying attention to their style moves on stage and screen, or just walking down the street.
2018 Projects: Poulter stars in The Little Stranger; a chilling horror movie directed by Lenny Abrahamson whose last project, Room, earned him an Academy Award nomination. The rest of the cast is good, too—Charlotte Rampling, Domhnall Gleeson, and Ruth Wilson also star in the film.
Why We Dig His Style: Poulter’s style is a little bit dark, which feels appropriate given the F-ed up characters he tends to play on screen. At the same time, it’s elegant too. The 24-year-old already knows his way around a slim, dark suit and his off-duty style is simple and streamlined.
2018 Projects: Chalamet already had a big year with the release of Call Me by Your Name but he’s got a slew of promising films in the can for 2018: Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut, Beautiful Boy, in which he plays Steve Carell’s meth-addicted son, Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day in New York, and a Western with Christian Bale called Hostiles.
Why We Dig His Style: Chalamet took no time at all elevating his wardrobe to leading-man levels of cool on his first big press tour. From velvet tuxes to bold-color suits, he nailed every look. It can’t hurt that the 22-year-old has Raf Simons and Haider Ackermann in his corner, among other menswear heavy-hitters.
2018 Projects: The 19-year-old released his first demo this year, Steve Lacy’s Demo, and collaborated with Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, The Creator, and Goldlink on new music too. In 2018 Lacy will release a new album with his band, The Internet. The Internet’s 2015 album, Ego Death, earned Lacy a Grammy nomination so hopes are high for this one.
Why We Dig His Style: From his collection of stamp-like tattoos to his assortment of skater-inspired clothes, Steve Lacy’s style has shades of Shia LaBeouf and Tyler, The Creator, with a little Tupac thrown in for good measure thanks to his love of overalls and buttoned-up flannels. We probably don’t have to tell you that the teen hails from Southern California.
2018 Projects: Joe Alwyn’s career is just heating up and 2018 could very well be the year it bursts into flames. The 26-year-old English actor has several movies due out in the coming months, including Mary Queen of Scots with Margot Robbie, Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Favourite with Emma Stone, and Boy Erased with Joel Edgerton and Nicole Kidman. He’s also dating Taylor Swift, which should keep him in the spotlight in between press tour stops too.
Why We Dig His Style: In case Alwyn’s penchant for historical dramas didn’t tip you off, he’s not the edgiest dresser in this crew. But the guy’s suit game has some strong Tom Hiddleston vibes (coincidence?), and his real-life clothes look like they were ripped out of Steve McQueen’s closet, so he can definitely hold his own in the style department.
Alton Mason Jr.
2018 Projects: Model, singer, dancer, actor, Instagram star Alton Mason Jr. first made a splash at Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 show at Madison Square Garden in 2016. This year he appeared on countless runways and in the pages of GQ, and starred (and by starred we mean starred) in Gucci’s Pre-Fall 2017 campaign, which featured a cast of black models. The 19-year-old is keeping his new projects under wraps for now, but we expect to see his style and moves in 2018.
Why We Dig His Style: As a teenager and professional model, Mason has the ability really go for it with his wardrobe—and he doesn’t waste the opportunity any day of the week. While his style is eclectic, a strong ’70s theme runs through all of his outfits in the best and coolest way. Think: open-collar shirts and snakeskin boots aplenty.
2018 Projects: After earning an Oscar nomination for his role in Manchester by the Sea, the New York native is keeping very busy. Hedges appears in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, in theaters now, and has a handful of films due to release in 2018 including Lady Bird with Chalamet, Boy Erased with Alwyn, as well as a film with Jonah Hill called, Mid ’90s.
Why We Dig His Style: Hedges’ shaved head, square jaw, and preference for dark tailoring landed him an ad campaign with Dior Homme this fall—and the relationship has only helped elevate his edgy-sophisticated style further. We’re looking forward to seeing him flex in some killer tailoring and sharp business casual clothes on his upcoming press tours.
2018 Projects: Matt Healy and his band The 1975 will release their third album in 2018, called Music for Cars. The Manchester-born band’s previous two albums topped the UK charts and earned them Best British Group at the Brit Awards this year, so fans are eagerly awaiting new music—and a sweaty, denim-heavy tour to go with it.
Why We Dig His Style: Healy’s grungy, glam style is something only an English rocker in their 20s could pull off, and we wouldn’t change it for the world. What guy alive doesn’t secretly want to wear a shiny suit one day and ripped jeans the next? Here’s hoping a new album and tour puts the frontman’s wardrobe front-and-center in the process.
2018 Projects: A starring role in Best-Picture winner Moonlight helped Sanders land on the map as an actor, now the 22-year-old is going big instead of going home. His 2018 releases include The Equalizer 2 with Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington and a Sci-Fi film set in Chicago called Captive State. Boom.
Why We Dig His Style: Sanders’s takes inspiration from Andre 3000, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles in his wardrobe, which makes him look more like a rebel musician poised for the MTV red carpet rather than the serious actor that he is. And yet, check him out at the Oscars and you’ll see he can do black tie just as well, if not better, than any movie star.
2018 Projects: English actor Harris Dickinson made noise this year in the indie hit, Beach Rats, and has some exciting projects in the pipeline for 2018 as well. One is a Sci-Fi flick with Mandy Moore, Gwendoline Christie, and Amandla Stenberg called The Darkest Minds, the other is an FX show in which he plays Getty Oil heir John Paul Getty III, called Trust. The show chronicles Getty’s kidnapping in Italy in 1973.
Why We Dig His Style: Dickinson doesn’t have a style swat team at his beck and call yet and already he’s dressing like an A-lister, wearing today’s baggier fits and ’60s and ’70s-inspired clothes like a pro. As his star continues to rise, and brands and stylists show him the yellow brick road, we’re predicting a steady stream of enviable ‘fits on and off the red carpet.
